Summary

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm giving this rating for a couple of reasons。。。 I was so disappointed with the way the ending was written。 I got tired of hearing her "I can't live without him" talk。 Another reason was the way the sexual stuff was written like "。。。it moved of its own accord"。 I understand she was a virgin, but those scenes were not believable to me。 The storyline was great。 I had high expectations but it just fell short for me。 I'm giving this rating for a couple of reasons。。。 I was so disappointed with the way the ending was written。 I got tired of hearing her "I can't live without him" talk。 Another reason was the way the sexual stuff was written like "。。。it moved of its own accord"。 I understand she was a virgin, but those scenes were not believable to me。 The storyline was great。 I had high expectations but it just fell short for me。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this book, I’ve not read any WWII fiction for a while - but this was defo worth the read。 You constantly find yourself wondering what danger is round the next corner on the next page。 Plus, I love that it is part written from a females perspective amongst a man’s world。

The first half was too romance-novel - the couple's falling in 'love' seemed more physical-attraction-based than actual love-based, and after they marry it feels like they just humped their way across the countryside until caught (can you tell I found them annoying? Some of their disagreements also seemed stupid, whether we can attribute that to them being a young, immature couple or the author trying for drama and choosing the annoying kind)。 After they got caught and went through the POW camps The first half was too romance-novel - the couple's falling in 'love' seemed more physical-attraction-based than actual love-based, and after they marry it feels like they just humped their way across the countryside until caught (can you tell I found them annoying? Some of their disagreements also seemed stupid, whether we can attribute that to them being a young, immature couple or the author trying for drama and choosing the annoying kind)。 After they got caught and went through the POW camps, labour crews, and death-march, things got more interesting--the second half earned it that third star--though it was still annoying how every time they mention the fear of her getting caught (which was understandably often), they had to spell out the specific fear of her getting gang-raped before she's executed。 We really didn't need that repeated every damn time; we know already; it's background noise; spelling it out every time made it feel like creepy titillation。Some reviewers objected to the coarse way some of the men talked, to which I say it's refreshing to see that apparently people who weren't grown-up in the pre-#MeToo period haven't experienced a time when guys felt free to be absolutely disgusting to women (some, at best, thinking they were being funny and/or friendly) and didn't realize how creepy and gross it was。 (For God's sake don't not-all-men me。)Pro: the supporting helper-characters enriched the story, giving us more to think about (and worry about) than a sappy romance; it was good to see POW camps of the plain-old-servicemen caliber rather than the officers caliber representedCon that took me out of it a lot: in alternating chapters between their two POVs, the author ALSO alternated between first-person-present tense for Izzy ("I saw, I thought") and third person for Bill ("He saw, he thought")。 I found that jarring; they really should have stuck with the same tense for both POVs, or just one POV。The ending felt a bit anti-climactic, disappointingly。 I would have liked more of the (view spoiler)[ reunion (hide spoiler)] scene for some emotional impact。There is a short afterword where the author explains how she heard about the story that inspired the novel from a veteran, including a clue of how the real story played out, and how the author researched conditions in the type of camps she wrote about to give the novel some authenticity。I am somewhat disappointed with how the interesting premise was executed (that first half was work for non-romance-novel me to get through), but the second half did make it a more enjoyable read, and I'm glad to see an interesting war story get told。 。。。more

This book intrigued me till the end。 I thought it was beautiful written and really made you connect with Izzy and Bill the whole way through。 I would really love for my young adult children to read this book to give them a solid understand of the horrors POWs endured。

This was absolutely heartbreaking。 Even though the ending was unrealistic my heart broke for how these group of men tried to hard to protect Izzy。 My gosh I might cry 😭✌🏻

This is a very interesting novel。 To think that a woman hid herself among men to stay with her husband, in those times is very believable。 It would have been scary and miserable。 I don't doubt for a minute that this woman suffered great, and was also very blessed to have had honorable men looking after her。 However, the character Izzy was just not at all interesting。 She was dull! I would have expected more from a woman brave enough to put herself in that situation。 I also expected more from Bil This is a very interesting novel。 To think that a woman hid herself among men to stay with her husband, in those times is very believable。 It would have been scary and miserable。 I don't doubt for a minute that this woman suffered great, and was also very blessed to have had honorable men looking after her。 However, the character Izzy was just not at all interesting。 She was dull! All I can say is the description of the lovers does not match the cover。 Interesting read, abrupt ending though and many unanswered questions which isn’t always bad in a book but this one didn’t end well…maybe there’s a second book? Great questions at the end for reflection at the end。 The situations they were in were horrendous and to imagine living through that would be hard!

This is an intense book。 It is hard to imagine how anyone survived the atrocities of the Nazi POW camps in Europe。 This is fiction based on an actual story of survival。 It is a love story of a man and woman who risked everything to stay together as prisoners in war torn Europe。 The lengths their fellow prisoners went to to keep the couple’s secret are very touching。

Me gusto mucho, un poco lento al comienzo, una historia que transmite el dolor, el miedo y por sobre todo la esperanza que sintieron los prisioneros de la segunda guerra mundial。

Based on a true story, the book follows the harrowing journey of Izzy and Bill as they hide Izzy’s gender under the noses of the POW camp guards。 It captures the bravery and selflessness of others to protect this secret and how, despite their horrendous circumstances, friendships were formed。
